I love Baltar. On the surface, he often times feels like the comedic relief, but, as you so perfectly summarised, he is also the main reason the plot keeps progressing. You somehow cannot not hate him, while you also cannot not love him. Great analysis!

Also, I'm so glad to find someone here who's a BSG fan! I don't know any but me and my dad haha. But it's my favourite Sci-Fi show too, it's an absolute masterclass in character study and development. I could talk about this show and what I've learned from it the whole day 😌

He is such an intrigue isn’t he. It’s like watching a catastrophe, but its funny, sad, anger-inducing, and ridiculous all at once.

I am very glad to find a BSG fan as well, I am always surprised at how niche it is as a show. I really know so few people who have watched it, despite it being referenced in the American Office all the time! (You would think people would have got curious, but then maybe the nerdy name puts people off).

I am introducing it to my partner at the moment, we are about 2/3rds of the way through s2 and im loving her reaction to it so far.

But yeah, it is a massive inspiration for me. Alongside Downton Abbey, I love shows that have massive casts, but still have a really tight story.

I both despised and loved Baltar in BSG!

He is brilliant for that isn’t he. A constant source of intrigue and upset. Sometimes you really admire him, sometimes you think he is the most despicable character you could imagine. For that alone, I really admired the way he was written.

Do you know of any other characters that fulfill a similar role? I was kind of thinking maybe Tyrion Lannister?

Lannister yes. Walter White?

I need to watch BSG at some point. Excellent article! Do I sense some inspiration for Lysander?

Thats a great question. I think Lysander has evolved a bit since when I first ideated him, and while I would say there is a BSG influence, its not Baltar specifically. I have actually just had a really good deep dive in where I want Lysanders character arc to go, and its added some layers I am excited to share.
